In the summer of 2011, Andrea Pirlo was a free agent. At age 32, AC Milan decided that they weren’t interested in giving the bearded wonder a new contract, and so the club and Italian talisman parted ways. Juventus clearly thought this was stoopid, and scooped up Pirlo on a free, making him the centerpiece of Antonio Conte’s resurgent squad.

They went on to win three straight Serie A titles (so far). This is what Pirlo’s radars have looked like over the past five seasons. He’s had an incredible run in his 30s that so far shows little sign of slowing down.

Is athleticism overrated in a deep lying playmaker role? I would be shocked if talent evaluators didn’t overrate athleticism much like they did in American sports before the analytics movement.

Not to say athleticism isn’t important for certain positions or vital in making certain players great. Busquets is one of the greatest players on earth because he can do it all.
