2024 Hudl Statsbomb Conference: Research Posters

The 2024 Hudl Statsbomb Conference was held at Old Trafford, Manchester just over a month ago. As part of the event, we invited the winners of our Research Competition to showcase their work to an audience of industry experts and professionals.

We received numerous submissions, and the quality of the proposals was incredibly high, making the selection process quite challenging. In order to recognise all of the best entries, we also invited several proposals to put their findings into research posters. These displays provided a platform for researchers to showcase and discuss their work with the conference attendees.

Additionally, we created several posters displaying the latest research from some of our very own analysts. We are excited to offer you a closer look at this work, covering a wide range of topics such as team tactics, large language models, player evaluation, and more.

The individual posters can be downloaded below, simply by clicking on the image.

Modelling team play style using tracking data to evaluate the effectiveness of variance in tactical behaviour

By Michael Gleeson

Should teams stick to an overarching philosophy and style of play, or should they look to adapt their approach based on the opponent and match situation they're facing?

Risks and rewards of executing transition events from settled possession

By Daniel Pritchard

Defining game situations that qualify as transition events and then analysing where teams are potentially weak is an area that could provide rich information for opposition analysts.

Measuring success with data

By Jaymes Monte

Jaymes provides an example of how teams can use data to measure their success in any desired aspect of their game model. The example he uses here is with throw-ins, showing the different ways teams might define success in this area and how they can use data to track their performance according to their definition.

Identifying opportunities created from switches of play

By Lily Wood-Blake

Lily examines how switches of play can provide an advantage to teams, using a range of data viz to showcase the various outcomes a team might want to measure from this area of play.
