StatsBomb Announce The Release Of Free Indian Super League Data

We are pleased to announce that we will be releasing the entire 2021/22 season of Indian Super League event data to the public today.

We have a long history of giving away free datasets, covering various competitions and periods in time. We’ve released iconic datasets for Lionel Messi’s entire La Liga career and Arsenal’s 2003/04 Invincibles season; as well as full seasons of Women’s Super League data and this summer’s Euro 2022 tournament to support the growth of the women’s game, and there's been plenty of other releases too.

However, we felt we could do more to support the global game. Football exists outside of Europe too, and it’s not gone unnoticed to us that many of the most passionate members of the football analytics community hail from India. In some ways, this is our way of giving back to those people as thanks for their contribution and energy given to the community over the years. But, it’s also an opportunity: to shine a light on a league that may have gone under the radar before now, and to accelerate the sophistication of analysis performed on and, hopefully, within the ISL. We hope that putting industry-leading event data into the hands of some of the most talented data analysts in the community can be the spark for something great.

We know many people will be able to take this data and run with it on their own, but we’ve also made resources available for those who want to learn these skills. Our past data releases have contained plenty of examples of R code to demonstrate how to manipulate the data and create a range of data vis — our ‘Using StatsBomb Data in R’ guide houses them all in one, easy-to-use document. The guide shows you how to pull the data from our free data API, create team and player metrics, and visualise them in ggplot. For Python users, there’s statsbombpy, our python package designed to make working with our free data that bit more straightforward.
