StatsBomb are delighted to sponsor the upcoming New England Symposium on Statistics in Sports in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday September 23rd 2023.
Since its inception, StatsBomb has remained dedicated to empowering the next generation and fostering the advancement of sports analytics globally. This commitment aligns with the values upheld by the NESSIS conference. It is why we are delighted to proudly sponsor this year's event, solidifying our shared mission to drive progress and innovation in sports analytics.
The annual event brings together statisticians and quantitative analysts from sporting universities, media outlets and teams to discuss common problems and points of interest in analysing sports data and statistical modelling. The agenda features a variety of specialised talks, a dedicated poster session and a panel discussion.
StatsBomb’s Dr Will Morgan (Head of American Football Data Science) and Abi Williams (American Football Data Scientist) are attending the conference this autumn and will be presenting a poster focused on using a bespoke classification model to predict the outcome of a drop-back play. The team has used the model to profile and evaluate quarterback performance across the NFL and NCAA.
The model incorporates game context information (yardline, down and distance) alongside features derived from StatsBomb’s tracking data to quantify pressure on the quarterback and receiver separation and route running.
Dr Will Morgan, Head of American Football Data Science, StatsBomb, added:
"We're delighted to sponsor and attend such a well regarded conference as NESSIS. Our poster details our approach to a more rounded evaluation of quarterback decision making and performance, which we're looking forward to presenting and discussing at the conference."
The poster will be available to review and discuss at NESSIS as part of the dedicated poster sessions. If you are attending the event and would like to meet with the StatsBomb team, please get in touch.
